Common Name: Feather Reed Grass
Container Size: 2 quart pot

Perennial Plant of the Year for 2001. This is a cool season, clumping grass with a compact, erect growth habit. It is especially prized in the north where the magnificent, wheat-like seed heads appear in late spring and last all season long. C. ‘Karl Foerster’ provides a great backdrop for lower growing, flowering perennials throughout the year. It is also useful for screening purposes and will not reseed. A good choice for heavy clay soils. ‘Karl Foerster’ prefers sunny, dry conditions. It can be grown in nearly any soil, including heavy clay. Be sure to provide plenty of moisture in extremely hot weather. Cut back to 6 in. in spring before new growth begins. Propagate by division in either spring or fall.

It is a selection of Nori Pope from England’s Hadspen House. ‘Gold Heart’ produces arching sprays of pink bleeding hearts in spring above shocking gold foliage. Best in light shade and moist soil. Excellent in the shade garden combined with Cimicifuga ‘Brunette’ or any selection of burgundy foliaged Heucheras.

Common Name: Bleeding Hearts
Flower: White

Every bit as charming as the pink form, D. s. ‘Alba’ forms large, bushy clumps of powdery-light green foliage comprised of cut or lobed leaves on fleshy stems. In late spring, chains of puffy, white, heart-shaped flowers dangle beneath the arching, leafless stems. These racemes make delightful additions to fresh bouquets, lasting about 2 weeks in a vase. In cooler climates with adequate moisture, the bloom time may be extended into early summer.

Common Name: Meadow Rue

Flower: White

If you loved the height and texture of ‘Cotton Candy’, this companion to the sturdy Meadow Rue swaps lavender pink flowers for clear white ones. ‘Cotton Ball’ creates a dense pillar of finely textured foliage and flowers, perfect for adding height to narrow spaces. Dark stems add contrast to wispy sprays of white flowers. The tall stems and long-lasting flowers make this selection excellent as a cut flower. Meadow Rue are not commonly bothered by browsing deer and rabbits.

Common Name: Daylily

Flower: Yellow-Gold

An improved ‘Happy Returns’ with larger flowers and nearly continuous bloom. ‘Going Bananas’ starts to bloom about 1-2 weeks later in early summer, but it blooms nearly continuously into early fall, unlike ‘Happy Returns’ which often stops flowering in August. The 4“, fragrant, canary yellow flowers have recurved, overlapping petals and slightly ruffled margins. They open fully and symmetrically just above the semi-evergreen foliage. The plants display excellent 3-way branching, producing 10-15 well-spaced flowers per scape. Diploid.

Common Name: Feathered Reed Grass

Flower: Purple shades

‘Overdam’ has variegated foliage that starts out with bright creamy-white margins which then fade to white with a pink flush. The upright clump of foliage will remain under 2′ tall. In late spring, strikingly erect, feathery plumes with sand-colored seed heads appear, reaching up to 5′ tall. ‘Overdam’ is an ideal backdrop for low-growing, flowering perennials all through the year.

Leaf Colour: Blue-Green/Yellow Creamy Centre
Flower: White Shades
Container: 3 quart

This giant hosta will add immediate interest with heavily corrugated, medio variegated leaves. Chartreuse centers jet to glaucous blue-green margins. Centers mature to creamy white in summer. In early summer large clusters of near white flowers will have birds and pollinators singing in the shade garden. ‘Sound of Music’ has the queen of hostas in the background, ‘Empress Wu’, so you know it’s going to get big!
